Quick Take: Citi ThankYou Rewards added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a transfer partner on September 20. Eligible annual-fee cardholders normally receive 1 JAL mile per Citi point, and a launch bonus increases that to 1,300 JAL miles per 1,000 Citi points through October 24, 2026. That can reduce a 55,000-mile JAL business-class base award to 43,000 Citi points. The catch is that JAL award pricing can jump when base seats are gone, new accounts may be unable to redeem for 30 days and transferred miles expire after 36 months.
Citi ThankYou points just became much more useful for travelers headed to Japan—and the launch promotion makes the new partnership unusually tempting.
Beginning September 20, eligible Citi cardholders can transfer ThankYou points directly to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank. Citi is also offering a 30% transfer bonus through October 24, turning every 1,000 points into as many as 1,300 JAL miles.
The best headline example is JAL business class between North America and Japan. When base-level award space is available, JAL charges 55,000 miles one way. During the bonus, transferring 43,000 Citi points produces 55,900 JAL miles—enough for the award with 900 miles left over.
That’s excellent. It’s also only part of the story. JAL has some rules that make speculative transfers riskier than they are with many other airline programs.
How the New Citi–JAL Partnership Works
The standard ratio depends on the Citi card attached to the ThankYou account.

In other words, the 30% bonus improves both tiers, but it doesn’t erase the underlying difference. Someone with an eligible annual-fee card gets 1,300 miles per 1,000 points; an eligible no-fee cardholder gets 910.
If you have multiple Citi cards, check the transfer screen inside your own ThankYou account before moving anything. Card eligibility, linked accounts and the displayed ratio matter more than a general list published elsewhere.
The important date: Citi’s 30% JAL transfer bonus is scheduled to end October 24, 2026. The partnership itself is ongoing; the enhanced ratio is not. Confirm the bonus on the final transfer screen before submitting.
What the Bonus Does to Real JAL Awards
The examples below assume an eligible Citi card that normally transfers 1:1. Because Citi transfers in 1,000-point increments, each calculation rounds up to the next 1,000 ThankYou points. Award space, taxes and surcharges are separate.

Those are JAL-operated awards at the lowest published level. They’re compelling because Mileage Bank members can sometimes see more JAL-operated award inventory than partner programs receive. Citi’s new direct route therefore isn’t just another way to pay for the same seat—it may expose seats that don’t appear through American AAdvantage or Atmos Rewards.
Business Class to Japan for 43,000 Citi Points
This is the award most people will notice. JAL lists business class between Japan and New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Seattle from 55,000 miles one way.
With the bonus, 43,000 Citi points become 55,900 JAL miles. That’s a remarkable price for a long-haul lie-flat seat, and it applies across JAL’s listed mainland U.S. gateways when base space is present.
The cash component isn’t trivial. JAL’s September chart shows carrier-imposed surcharges starting at $316.30 plus taxes and fees starting at $29 for these routes. Those amounts can change, so compare the complete checkout price—not just the miles.
Premium Economy for 31,000 Citi Points
JAL’s published premium-economy base price between the same U.S. gateways and Japan is 40,000 miles one way. A 31,000-point Citi transfer generates 40,300 miles.
This can be the sweet spot when business class isn’t available and the economy cabin feels like too much of a compromise for a transpacific flight. The mileage premium over economy is only 13,000 JAL miles—or 10,000 Citi points during the bonus.
First Class for 85,000 Citi Points
JAL prices its own first-class awards seasonally rather than through Award Ticket PLUS. The lowest published price from eligible North American gateways is 110,000 miles one way, rising to 125,000 in regular season and 140,000 in high season.
During the transfer bonus, those levels require 85,000, 97,000 or 108,000 Citi points respectively after rounding. That’s not cheap, but the low-season result is still notable for a cabin that can command thousands of dollars in cash.
JAL Miles Can Also Book Partner Airlines
JAL Mileage Bank isn’t limited to Japan Airlines flights. Members can redeem on oneworld carriers and separate partners using distance-based award charts.
That opens several interesting options:
- American Airlines business class from the East Coast to Europe: A nonstop route within the 2,001-to-4,000-mile band can price at 42,000 JAL miles one way, requiring 33,000 Citi points during the bonus.
- LATAM business class between the U.S. and Chile: Routes falling in the 4,001-to-6,000-mile partner band price at 60,000 JAL miles, requiring 47,000 Citi points during the bonus.
- A larger oneworld itinerary: A multi-airline business-class itinerary totaling up to 20,000 flown miles prices at 120,000 JAL miles. During the bonus, 93,000 Citi points produce 120,900 miles.
The last option is where JAL’s program gets unusually creative. A oneworld award can include as many as eight flight sectors and seven stopovers, subject to routing rules. Pricing is based on total itinerary distance, so an efficiently designed trip can include several destinations for one mileage price.
That isn’t a beginner booking. You need eligible partner award space on every segment, the route can’t improperly backtrack and taxes or fuel surcharges may vary dramatically by airline. Still, few programs allow that many stopovers on one award.
The Biggest Catch: JAL Uses Award Ticket PLUS
The 27,000-mile economy and 55,000-mile business prices are base levels, not guaranteed rates on every available flight.
When a JAL-operated economy, premium-economy or business-class flight no longer has base-level award space, Mileage Bank may offer a higher Award Ticket PLUS price. The increase can be enormous. JAL’s current chart shows maximum PLUS prices above 400,000 miles for business class on several North American routes.
A 30% transfer bonus doesn’t make a 400,000-mile award a good deal. Always search the exact flight and confirm that the displayed mileage is close to the base level before deciding what the award is worth.
Don’t transfer based on the award chart alone: Find the exact seat, confirm the mileage price and review the cash total first. Citi transfers are generally one-way, and JAL miles have a hard expiration. A theoretical 55,000-mile business-class award doesn’t help if your date prices through Award Ticket PLUS at several times that amount.
New JAL Accounts Have a 60-Day Problem
JAL says mileage may not be redeemed for awards for a maximum of 60 days after enrolling in Mileage Bank. That rule is especially important because Citi’s bonus ends October 24—only 34 days after the partnership launched.
If you open a JAL account now, you may not be able to complete an award booking before the transfer bonus ends. That makes the usual “find the seat, then transfer” process harder for brand-new members.
Open the free account now if JAL miles may be useful later, but don’t assume opening it guarantees immediate redemption access. Existing members should confirm they can log in, that the legal name matches the Citi account and that the redemption tools work before transferring.
JAL Miles Expire—and Activity Doesn’t Reset Them
JAL miles are valid through the final day of the 36th month following the month in which they were earned or transferred. Ordinary account activity doesn’t extend that deadline.
That’s a major reason not to move a large speculative balance just because 30% sounds generous. Citi ThankYou points remain flexible while they’re in Citi. Once transferred, they become JAL miles with JAL’s expiration policy, award rules and availability risk.
JAL also restricts who can use an award. Mileage Bank permits redemptions for the member, a spouse or same-sex partner, specified relatives and certain in-laws. It isn’t designed for casually booking anyone’s ticket.
Changes Require a Cancellation and Rebooking
JAL doesn’t permit changes after an international award has been ticketed. To change the date, flight or cabin, you must cancel the unused award and make a new reservation.
The published cancellation charge is 3,100 Japanese yen per ticket, or the local-currency equivalent. That fee is reasonable compared with the potential value of the award, but the original seat disappears during the process and the new flight must have award availability at the current price.
How to Decide Whether to Transfer
- Check account age: If the JAL account is new, determine whether the redemption waiting period still applies.
- Search JAL first: Confirm the exact date, cabin and mileage price rather than relying on a base-rate example.
- Review the cash total: Include fuel surcharges, airport taxes and any partner-airline fees.
- Verify the Citi ratio: Make sure your transfer screen shows 1,300 JAL miles per 1,000 points if you expect the full bonus.
- Round up correctly: Divide the miles needed by 1.3 and round up to the next permitted transfer increment.
- Transfer only what you need: Leave a small cushion if necessary, but avoid creating a large orphan balance.
- Recheck before ticketing: Transfer times and award availability can change. Confirm the seat again as soon as the miles post.

Adding JAL Mileage Bank is an excellent improvement to Citi ThankYou Rewards. Eligible annual-fee cardholders receive a strong 1:1 standard ratio, and the launch bonus raises it to 1:1.3 through October 24.
The best examples are legitimately exciting: 21,000 Citi points for JAL economy to Japan, 31,000 for premium economy and 43,000 for business class when base awards are available. JAL miles can also unlock inexpensive partner awards and complex oneworld itineraries with multiple stopovers.
The bonus is worth using for a real booking. It isn’t a reason to transfer blindly. Award Ticket PLUS can make JAL-operated seats dramatically more expensive, new members may face a redemption delay and the miles expire after 36 months regardless of ordinary account activity.
Find the seat, verify the full price and transfer the smallest amount that completes the booking. That’s how this new partnership becomes a great deal instead of a stranded balance.
