Potential coverage gaps
Credit card protection is usually narrower than a dedicated single-trip or annual travel insurance policy. Card benefits are commonly tied to a qualifying charge and a limited list of covered events. They may have lower limits, longer waiting periods, secondary reimbursement, restrictive family definitions, and little or no protection for emergency medical care, medical evacuation, pre-existing conditions, supplier failure, or other risks that a standalone policy may be able to address.
A separate policy is not automatically better for every traveler, and annual plans can also have per-trip limits, exclusions, and benefit caps. Compare the complete terms, not just the headline benefit amounts, including:
- covered reasons and exclusions;
- medical and evacuation limits;
- primary versus secondary reimbursement;
- trip-cost and per-person limits;
- award-ticket and split-payment eligibility; and
- deadlines, documentation, and pre-authorization requirements.
Claims handling is also part of the coverage decision. Consider who administers the benefit or policy, how easy the company is to reach during an emergency, whether assistance is available around the clock, how clearly it explains required documents, and its ability to guide a traveler through a complicated claim. Strong wording on paper is less useful when the claims process is difficult to access or navigate.
